Case Study

EAGD171398 – Cauldwell Bridge, Bedford

Client: Cadent Gas

Scope: 450mm MP Gas Main Installation through Tunnel Crossing

Principal Contractor: HB Tunnelling

This multi-million-pound Cadent scheme involved the installation of a 450mm medium pressure (MP) gas main through a tunnel constructed beneath a live Network Rail line.
HB Tunnelling acted as the Principal Contractor for the tunnelling phase, with Prestige Pipelaying JV Ltd (PPL)responsible for the gas main installation.

The works required precision, planning, and strict adherence to safety controls due to the confined environment and 10-metre working depth.
PPL’s team delivered the installation with accuracy and care, ensuring full compliance with Cadent’s specifications and all HAUC and NRSWA requirements.

The project also included the installation of Intermediate Pressure (IP) and Medium Pressure (MP) mains connecting into a large governor station, forming a key part of the wider upgrade to Bedford’s gas network.
