Backfill operations

We reinstate excavations using approved materials and compaction techniques that meet and exceed HAUC (UK) Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH) standards.
Our backfill process includes:

  • Placement of Type 1, MOT, or flowable fill materials to specified layer depths
  • Layer-by-layer compaction testing to ensure long-term ground stability.
  • Material traceability and batch testing for quality control
  • Use of recycled and sustainable materials to support environmental targets
 

Emergency and reactive repairs

Our dedicated reinstatement teams operate a 24/7 emergency response service for urgent repairs following gas escapes, water bursts, or unplanned excavations.

We mobilise within tight timeframes to carry out:

  • Rapid backfill and temporary surfacing.
  • Permanent reinstatement once emergency works are complete.
  • Traffic management setup in line with Chapter 8 and local authority requirements

Permanent reinstatement

Once backfill is complete, our surfacing crews deliver a full reinstatement service across highways, footpaths, and private property.

This includes:

  • Bituminous reinstatement – base, binder, and wearing course installation using approved asphalt mixes.
  • Concrete and modular paving reinstatement – flags, blocks, slabs, and edgings
  • Specialist finishes – decorative paving, resin-bound surfaces, gravel, and private drive reinstatement
  • Line marking and road stud replacement in accordance with local authority specifications.
 

Temporary reinstatement

Where permanent works are phased or delayed, we install compliant temporary surfaces to maintain public access and road safety until final reinstatement is completed.

Quality, compliance and management systems

Every reinstatement we deliver is managed through strict quality assurance and inspection processes.
Our supervisors and operatives are fully NRSWA-accredited and work to the latest version of the HAUC Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH).
